Anyone know of a source (other than Bird) for mufflers and exhaust pipe sections for 1986-88 pushers (8V92)? Seems the muffler vendor for Bird will only sell to Bird. And I cannot locate a shop that has 6" pipe or can bend the pipe.

I have an '81FC. The power steering pump is seeping a bit by the bottom seal. Bluebird no longer has a rebuild kit for it but would sell me one for $900.00. I contend there must be cheaper less expensive pumps around. It does not need to be replaced r ght now, but while I am having my radiator recored at $822.50, I thought I might have this taken care of too. Thanks if anyone can help me.

While most problems with this system is related to low voltage at the module, a failed component is a problem because manufacture of components stopped in 1999. 3-G productions can be a help with the Bendix system as they rebuilt the modules and will als rebuild the CC5 cylinder. I think the price of a rebuilt module is $160. 3-G Productions 2970 Blystone Ste 104 Dallas TX 75220 888/269-4084

Comments:
I'm trying to install a 3208 with an Allison MT-643 into a 1963 Bluebird to replace the original 401 gas v6. I'm having problems locating parts for the 3208. It is a long block and is missing starter, alternator, brackets, fan, shroud, air cleaner, engi e mounts, tranny cooler, tranny mount, etc.. I was hoping to find an old "blown" engine and strip parts from it, but no luck. I've also heard I'll run into trouble with the "dog house". Not sure this setup will fit? Anyway, looking for comments, ideas etc that might help. My local Bluebird shop can supply eng mounts and exhuast parts if I model it after a 1983 Bird... Any reason to use different year parts? Thanx.. Michael

Subject: Oil Shear
Comments:
Non-synthetic oils do start with the lower viscosity oil and add short-lived modifiers to produce the higher numbers of multi-viscosity oils, but Mobil 1 5W-30 for instance contains NO viscosity modifiers as it is multi-viscosity by nature. This is becaus the synth. oil does not thicken as much when cold, nor thin as much when hot, as the dinosaur oils on which the viscosity rating system is based. Therefore, these oils have no viscosity modifiers to break down. I don't know what DD recommends, but Holland Motor Express (who used to operate next door to Holland Motor Homes' current location) ran Mobil's synthetic Delvac 1 in their DD powered fleet for millions of successful miles. The svc. manager at the time tol me that the extended oil change interval as well as reduced internal failures was reducing fleet op. costs due to reduced vehicle down-time and increased fuel mileage. I would check with DD on their current reccomendation (and not just a local service te h.) to see if it is currently recommended (it is probably not considered to be worth the money on a low-annual mileage engine such as most of our coaches, especially with the large oil capacity of a S-60 or equiv., but is sure does fire up quickly and giv fast oil pressure on cold Michigan winters).

Subject: Oil shear
Comments:
JAMiller - Because the base oil stock in multi viscosity oils is the low weight number and will not support the shear requirements of the high weight number,I have not used multi viscosity oils (dino or synthetic) in my DD 92 series engine. There are cer ain advantages to synthetic oil but to my knowledge, Detroit has not recommended a synthetic oil (multi or single viscosity) for the 92 series engines. Do you have different information on this topic.

My Email:jamiller@iserv.net
Subject: Oil, redi-line, chargers, and dash-lights
Comments:
I will never, never use a multi-viscosity dino oil in a diesel (that I intend to keep). The viscosity modifiers will break down and not protect the engine, they cannot even handle shear when new. The CAT manual calls for straight-weight oil, and is adequa e when used with the engine block heater, but a better solution is to use Caterpillar's synthetic multi-viscosity oil (made by Mobil) or Mobil Delvac-1 synthetic (basically the same stuff) which has excellent cold-start and pump-up performance as well as xceeding all of the dinosaur oil performance. Besides, the Cat doesn't hold much oil compared to the DD engines so the difference in price isn't that much. Also, the Cat filters are worth the extra dollar (open a box and compare one to an el-cheapo Fram). I agree whole-heartedly on the suggestion for stat-power chargers or equivalent. In fact, I'd spend the extra couple of dollars to get a three-state charger in an inverter such as the Heart Freedom series or Trace. Your batteries and flourescent lights wi l last much longer. In a 2000w continuous inverter you get a 100amp charger. The '83 dash light problem could be quite expensive. The dash surface contains an Electro-Luminescent inlay (EL), which is powered by a small inverter below the dash. Access is easiest via the outside panel with the Left windshield wiper on it. The panel tself I'm told runs around $2000, if it is bad (maybe someone drilled a hole through it for a switch) you might elect to get a map-light which fits into your cigarette lighter (available from campingworld or westmarine). I see no down-side to changing the 5.29:1 NA rear end out to a 4.63:1, except price. This change will probably cost around $1500 if your old gears and bearings are good, assuming that you can fit them in the pumpkin. You will lose hill-climbing performanc , but gain fuel mileage and engine life (or speed, your choice). You will probably not recover the investment in fuel mileage. If you need tires, you might look at buying used 24.5 wheels and new tires to gain speed instead.

Does anyone know the inner workings of the IKI mirrors used on the 1980's Blue Birds. I have removed the allen set screw, spring and plunger from the arm but it will not move. Subject: Chargers
Comments:
I have used two StatPower True Charge 40 Amp Plus chargers for the last year. These chargers are the absolute last word in charger technology, "switcher technology", and are probably the only chargers that actually "charge" a battery, others only providi g current to the battery and calling the process charging. Each StatPower True Charge 40 Pluse will charge a 440 amp hour battey bank and since you have six 6 volt golf cart batteries (or three 12 volt equivalents) producing 660 amp hours of capacity you should probably have two chargers although one StatPower may do the job. Don't worry about replacing two 50 amp ferro/resonant (factory original)chargers with two StatPower 40 amp units because factory testing showed the two original 50 amp chargers only provided 57 amps of current to the batteries. You can expect the StatPower's to deliver full amperage. StatPower's have selectable different charging rates for flooded cell, gel cell and the new AGM batteries and compensate for the battery temperature. The big advantage of Statpower is they only charge the batteries when the batteries require charging and never over charge. These chargers are expensive compared to others and you can find them at Camping World or call StatPower at 800/670-0707.

Subject: Coach electrical
Comments:
Bruce: You have discovered you need both 30 amp connections to have power throughout the coach or one 50 amp connection because the wiring is divided into legs. A single 30 amp, 120 volt connection provides 3,600 watts of power (30 amps X 120 volts = 3,600 watts and two of the same connections produce 7,200 watts of power. But a 50 amp connection (so called) produces 12,000 watts of power because 50 amp service contains two 120 volt wires, each capable of carrying 50 amps of current (50 X 120 X 2 = 12,000)so tha you actually have 100 amp, 120 volt service (100 X 120 = 12,0000). Tie up to 50 amp service whenever you can and use a 30 amp connector to you 50 amp cord when you can't, but remember, 50 amp service is more than three times more powerful than 30 amp se vice. Comments:
Have you tried looking in the overhead compartment above the dash? Thats where quite a few fuses and breakers are located. Something else to look at is the large round plugs on either side of the overhead breaker panel. I think they are called "cannon lugs" (?). Anyhow, sometimes I lose my bathroom lights so I have to open up that overhead compartment and unscrew the large cannon plug on the left, wiggle it a little and then retighten it. It works everytime. It seems that the pin contacts within the plug develop a little corrosion or something and they need to be moved around a little to make good contact again.

It wasn't the purge valve on the dryer after all. It was the AD2 air governor on the compressor stuck in the open or purge mode. Whew- what a time trying to find this. Bruce, the 'Bird's electrical system basically is divided in two halves--the front of the coach and the rear. You have choices in how to power it up with shore power. You can use a 50 amp cord and power the whole coach, you can use a 30 amp cord and pow r one half of it, you can use two 30 amp cords and power the whole coach with 60 amps of power or you can buy a 50 amp marine plug adapter and connect it to a 30 amp cord/receptacle and power the whole coach, bearing in mind that you will only have 30 amp total power available. You can get the adapter at Camping World, Marine supply stores, etc. I use mine all the time with the 30 amp cord when I don't need the air cond. Hope this helps.

I have connected one of the two 30 amp cords to the Bird (top connection) and it seems to get some things to work but not others. My duplex outlets are not hot. Do both 30 amp cords need to be hot to work right? If so, can I use the 50 amp cord with a 30 amp adapter to get full power within the coach? The book is not clear. Thanks again . . . still . . . until the next time.

I am the proud new owner of a 1983 FC35 Wanderlodge. It is my 6th RV and 4th Coach, but it has so many widgets I am a little lost. What should be simple - turning on the windshield wipers has evaded me! The coach just passed NC inspection in May, so I am reasonably sure that they work, but pressing the switches doesn't seem to do anything. Regardless of position of ignition key. D esn't even work if the engine is running. Am I missing something that is really obvious? I was so desperate that I even read the manual! But alas . . . no success. Help . . . Bruce Raleigh, NC

Subject: Armrest 1984PT36
Comments:
I assume that you have the FlexSteel seats like everyone else. Having just reupholstered the seats in my bus, I can tell you the armrests are pretty sturdy. Kind of hard to believe they both broke off. Sounds like someone was awful tough on them. How ard to fix depends on what broke off. The armrest itself has a wooden core. The swivel mechanism is screwed on to it. The swivel is actually just a smooth stud that goes through the frame back and has a retaining ring on it to keep it from pulling out. The swivel stud is welded onto a flat backing plate that also contains a welded on travel stop. This backing plate is what is screwed on to the wooden armrest core. If the upholstered arm piece came off the swivel backing plate, it would be relatively e sy to fix. Remove the upholstery cover (should have zippers on it) and put in new larger screws, or drill right through the wood and install bolts and nuts to hold the backing plate to the wooden core. Replace upholstery cover. That would be the easy ca e. If it is the swivel stud itself that is broken it would be a major repair. Real hard to believe the stud is broken off though. Best thing to do there is try to find a number for FlexSteel and try to get them to sell you new swivel plates or complete new arm assemblies.

While I was having my generator serviced for another problem the Kohler service rep pointed out to me that he had taken the liberty to ins all a small external charger mounted on the generator slide-out tray. The Kohler rep explained to me that the majority of the older Kohler's that he services have a bad charging circuit (component). He went on to explain that instead of replacing the or ginal internal charging component he just wires in an external charger which is both cheaper and much more reliable. In my case he was right. Accordingly, would the previosly mentioned folks and any others from this web site care to meet there Sat afternoon, circle the wagons, and put faces to the names. For instance, I regularly e-mail 5-6 birders but have only met one of them face-t -face. Am open to any idea, but I propose we could initially identify ourselves to each other by a hankerchief(or paper towel) placed on left side wind shield wiper blade. If you all can't or don't want to meet on Sat we could still use the hankerchief me hod to identify our coaches during the rally proper. Of course. we will most likely also meet during the "vintage birds" lecture series. What say you all? Comments? Ideas?

Mike: I assume you have an RCA TC2055 camera because your description indicates a weak picture tube. I had my TC2055 rebuilt by Kelton Electronics (504/443-0060) at a cost of $170 and while the camera worked better it was still not up to par. I replaced the c mera with a new Ultrak (KC4500MN) CCD camera with Cosmicar/Pentax CCD camera lens C70406DCPS (4.0mm F1.2) with auto iris at a cost of $430. This is a straight bolt in, wire in replacement for the obsolete RCA. The left to right picture was not corrected on the RCA camera so that when the monitor viewing direction was reversed to look forward from the overhead dash, cars were seen to be passing correctly on the left. The Ultrak picture is corrected left to right so on your monitor, the picture will now a pear reversed left to right. The factory solution to this condition is to use two 30 amp Bosh relays, activated by the ingntion switch, to reverse the monitor left and right coils when the ignition is on so the picture will appear correct when viewing fo ward. David If you have the Retarder, it will be a lever in front of your shift selectoe about six inches long with four numbered detents. When pulled into one of the detents with the ignition on you should see an amber light above the windshiels in the overhea counsel. it should be next to the warning light for your antenna up warning. The way to see if you have the air Oil fill is to look for a black tank in front of your propane tank, this is the storage tank for the engine oil. There is a filling valve att ched to a short hose that is attached to a meter marked in quarts delivered. This is over the Engine oil filler in the valve cover next to the driver. If you have a swing away radiator it will have hinges in the area of the front bumper.

There was a "rear bath" model, where the bathroom spanned the rear of the coach, nice bathroom, but it was available only with twin beds an you walk between these beds on the way back to the bathroom. In '87 the layout was again changed, and the bathroom in the 35' side-bath moved rearward a little, and grew again. What the mechanic is probably going to do is to set the max. flow a little higher in the fuel rack so that you can get a little more power. I believe that you should get about 350hp with stock 9G90 injectors. You can also go to larger injectors, I believe that N100s are acceptable. If your injectors are worn anyway, it might be a good option. At any rate, turning up the fuel turns up also the heat (more fuel = more heat, just like a furnace) so watch your pyrometer on hill climbs, and watch the engine temp. It is not worth burning up an expensive engine for 20hp when you only climb hills aroun 2% of the time. Depending on the year, some of the air intakes were restrictive. Make sure that you have a clean air filter, and check to see if you have a good open path for the air to travel down from the roof intake. More air is more power. More air will also help kee pyrometer temps down.

Subject: What to buy
Comments:
For the $40k range, you will be looking at an early-mid diesel FC, depending on condition and equipment. I suggest a turbo for the mountains, the turbo doesn't add much performance but without it you will lose 3% of your power per 1,000ft altitude (about /3 at 11,000ft). Some of the early non air-spring models will outrun and out handle the 225hp and 250hp turbos ('83-86), just because of the added weight on these later coaches, but at altitude the turbo catches up and it doesn't smoke as much up there. I you buy a turbo be sure that it was not added to a 2-ring (non-turbo) engine as these engines were not designed to handle the heat/pressure of the turbo, Caterpillar can tell you from engine serial number. I strongly suggest also that you buy an FC with swing radiator, or have one installed, as these coaches will need maintenance and it is rediculously expensive and difficult without the swing radiator. Also, look for a model with a retarder, I believe that it was standard on the 35' but optional on the 31' and 33'. These FC coaches are very manuverable for their size, we took a FC 31' through many passes and mountain roads and have never had a problem. Many mountain roads that I've traveled have a 35' max. overall length.

Comments:
Yes, the pusher is much nicer/quieter to drive than the FC. Does it justify the cost? Can you justify the cost of a motorhome? Drive them both and decide. The pusher will cost more, gets worse mileage, and is more expensive to maintain, but it is much nic r to drive. Remember also that BB produced two wanderlodge pushers: the PT (pusher tag-axle) which is a raised rail chassis with detroit diesel power (much heavier but lots of storage) and the SP (single-axle pusher) which is essentially the FC with the 3 0hp Cat moved to the rear (good performance and mileage, lighter, but the lower floor and fender intrusions limit floor plans and storage, still not bad compared to the 35'-38' PT because it saves the 5' of storage space that the tag-axle wheels take on t e PTs) The SP was also a mid-door coach, where PTs were almost all front-door.

Subject: MPG on 1972 FC31
Comments:
I recently purchased a 1972 FC31 w the 391ci Ford industrial engine. It appears the old Bird only has 66,000 miles on the coach. (?) The engine was recently replaced and only has 2000 miles on it. It is connected to an Allison 6 speed automatic with a 2 speed rearend. It has 9.00 x 20 tires. I believe all of this is standard equipment for 1972. I was expecting better than the 4-5 mpg I got on our first two outings. Is this the mpg I should expect? At 3000 rpm in high gear my speed is 58 mph. Last time I tried running at this speed hopeing for better mpg, no such luck. However, the old bird seems to run a little easier at 3400 rpm and a speed of 62 mph or so. Is 3400 rpm any harder on the new eng ne and/or would backing off to 3000 rpm extend the life of the engine? Finally, I realize the vintage BB is famous for being underpowered, but it seems to be a real struggle to get up a small hill and any real hill is impossible in high gear. Again, is this just the way it is with a small gas engine and a 26,000 pound bus? So far, we like the old BB. It is in fairly good condition. I couldn't believe the fresh water tank was steel. It was full of rust - obviously a poor choice and one of the first replacements. I'm a little confused about the whole coach electrical syst m which seems to be just a part of the engine electrical system. I don't have a electrical diagram of the 12volt system and would appreciate a source. Thanks for the help

Comments:
The 3208 ATAAC is a turbocharged, aftercooled engine. The pistons are different also, 3 rings vs 2 rings/piston. The amount of parts and work necessary to convert (turbo, aftercooler, radiator, plumbing, pistons, complete overhaul, possibly heads, etc.) w uld probably cost more than getting a remanufactured 300hp engine from Caterpillar, they will give you a decent trade-in on your healthy 210hp engine. Try making some fuel injection changes to your current engine, a good Cat 3208 tuner can help you turn i up a bit. The max. fuel flow light is indicating restriction in the fuel filter.

I was driving an '86 FC35 with the 3208TA engine the other day. Several times the "Max Fuel Flow" light on the dash came on. The air cleaner restriction gauge was in the normal range, slightly below the red, and there was no black smoke coming out the e haust. Max boost was about 7 -- the book says it should be about 21.5. Is this just an indication of a clogged fuel filter or does it sound like a turbo problem? Thanks.

Recently I changed out 3 of the flourescent lights in my 1980 35'FC. When doing so I changed the bulbs in the living room area to a "warm white" flourescent bulb. I really like the effect as it takes away the blue cast from the cool white bulbs. I thin it is a better light to read by, especially when you are getting to the age of needing more light to read by as I seem to be. The bulb I used is a Sylvania F15T8/DWW/RP.

Can someone tell me what this wiring feeds?? My guess is the dash mounted amp guage, the dash mounted voltmeter and the ????? Tim: Check the voltage across a dash light bulb (I assume that you mean instrument lights), if less than 12v find out if your ground is good, and your 12v supply is good (also with the voltmeter). Your genset battery is charged from the genset itself, I believe through a resistor pack. It is likely that the resistor/diode is bad on the genset. I feel that a worthwhile investment on your coach would be a good quality 3-state charger to replace the t in 50a chargers, you'll pay for it in battery life, and a Heart Interface Battery Combiner (called the Pathmaker) to replace the battery parallel relay. This will allow the system to charge your genset battery directly from the charger system (house, engi e, or genset) and automatically disconnects when there is no charging while avoiding the .6v-1.2v drop of a traditional battery isolator. Your batteries will thank you. Try www.westmarine.com for these, also www.campingworld.com.

Comments:
You are not nuts. We are a young couple, with three children and bought a vintage bird for different reasons. Mostly safety and durability. The bonus has been how sound an investment it has been (as far as motorcoaches are concerned). We have renovated it for an additional cost of around $10k, and our total investment is still less than some friends with "entry level" pushers, and we have exactly the colors and features that we want and much higher quality. Our cost of operation has been significantly lowe , and the other BB owners we've met have been fantastic as well as factory personnel. Finally, after 3years of use, 38 states and almost 30,000miles, it has barely depreciated compared to friends' coaches bought new and dropping in value quickly. Much of he value of these older coaches is in condition and features, not years. I do feel that it is best to buy a coach with your own money, not borrowed as it makes occasional use of the coach less stressful than it is for those people making payments monthly s the coach is not used. For cost of operation, to some extent older is cheaper, but any coach in poor repair will be costly.

Thanks to all of you (six so far!) who responded to "Are We Nuts?". You are obviously intelligent and friendly folks with lots of sage advice. We went to Holland Motor Homes here in San Diego, saw a couple of great Wanderlodges, and are getting ready for purchase. We were treated very well by the knowledgeable sales staff. Is it better to buy from a good dealer, or are you better off buying from an individual. BJMD said to find a home from a couple who've had the resources to keep an older bird maintained and are ready to get off the road for good--sounds like good advice. He also said there could be $25,000 to invest if you want to completely restore a used home. He advised to spend $500 in a pre-purchase inspection, more good counsel. Dealer or individual? W at's best? The salesman said he'd look for a coach from the West/South since the weather's easier on them than one from a harsher climate. Your ideas? We're going to finance the purchase. What are your ideas on finance? We'll need to stay under $100,000. Should I be setting aside $4-6,000 in an annual maintenance fund now? Also the spotlight bulb? On another note, a family member is looking into some lighting fixes for the flouresents (sp) in the coach that will hopefully be cheaper and available. I'll let you know. Bob

New alternator installed and guages show little charging being done. Gauge reads at 12 most of the time and below 12 when various loads are put on it. Is there a kit available for a swing radiator? any suggestions?

We are the proud owners of an 84FC. I have 2 toggle switches directly under the camera fog switch on the upper instrument panel. Does anyone know what these do? We have operated them and it seems like it was for an accessory that was removed but the switc es remain. Thanks all.

just completed jeff millers suggested change of running the engine mounted a/c compressor off a new 3 grove pulley mounted on the alternator. Great results! takes a 1/2" X 31 or 32" belt. Ordered pulley from local starter/alternator rebuilder. 3 1/2 dia p lley with 7/8 bore. used on some mack trucks

I've tried BB in Ga. with little response?? So here goes, anyone know where I can get the front airbags for my rig? Who makes them, what's the Number or how can I get them. One of mine has a fine pinhole that leaks and at least that one should be replac d. Probably all four? Anyhow, bluebird sent me to local bird commercial bus co, who is calling bb for parts #s. With all the collective wisdom out there maybe one of you knows the ans. Bob

Subject: Holland follow-up
Comments:
Last month I wrote about the "after the sale" attentiveness at the San Diego Holland facility. I am happy to be able to compliment Mike, the owner and staff on their communication, understanding, and completion of tasks identified concerning my 86 PT40 BB purchased there. The work included some major systems some minor areas that needed attention. The corrective work has been satisfactory. On some tasks they went out of their way to fix the problems. I beleive any purchaser of an expensive vehicle such as a BB, needs to have the perseverance to work with the seller to come to an agreeable and amicable understanding. This was accomplished and again I applaud Holland for their diligence toward getting his task completed in a timely manner. Dan

I also installed some real lights, went with clear bulbs though in Hella lights. On the compressor belt, you can remove your pulleys on the alternator and install a triple pully in its place, then run one belt from the alternator straight to the A/C compressor. This setup has worked great for me for years, and if the A/C belt blows, i won't take out several other belts at the same time (as it is famous for doing).

Subject: 1985PT-generator soundproofing
Comments:
The "foam" soundproofing material glued to the housing of my generator needs to be replaced. The factory will do a 100% replacement for about $825.They will use the same soundproofing material that is used in the new birds. They remove the generator to get access to the housing. Does anyone have any experience on this, either biting the bullet or doing it yourself? Is there a smart way to remove and reinstall the generator without a lot of manpower and equipment? I'm referring to the 12.5kw Kohler with the front power slideou . Thanks for any comments/suggestions....John
