Subject: Rear Camera Installation
Comments:
We recently acquired a 1984 FC Wanderlodge II that has never had a rear view TV monitor system. I purchased an Audiovox system that I am now installing. I am running the cable from the rear camera behind to a monitor I am mounting on the dash. The job looks pretty easy behind the panels in the overhead compartments. Any ideas on the best way to route the cable from the overhead cable run to get down under the dash on the driver side of t

Bullydog Technology has a unit that adds propane to air intake to produce more power, so they claim. Has anyone ever done this? Wonder how much wear and tear on the old 3208NA it will cause? Sure could use the extra ponies!! Russ Kell

Subject: coach bounce
Comments:
Check your front shocks. If you have the original Koni shocks, they are adjustable. Compress them all the way and twist until you feel them catch. Then turn them in clockwise until they bottom. Turn them back out 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns. Bounce should be much ess. Your tire pressure sounds a little low. Run what Blue Bird recommends for your coach or the maximum cold pressure specified on your tire sidewall. It will list pressures for both dual and single applications.

Subject: Holland
Comments:
Purchased a coach from the CA Holland facility. having significant problems with them being attentive after the sale. Many major systems not fixed at PDI, and hassles to get them done now that I own it. Requested a copy of the PDI work done on the coach and was refused by the shop foreman. I wanted it for two reasons: 1. for a baseline for maintenance, 2. To confirm what was done and what was not relating to what I was told at time of delivery. Is this not something that you should be able to get, if requested. What are my legal remedies regarding this request? Any relevant info regarding the above will be appreciated. Dan

I added a 5 incn air intake to the air cleaner housing. Using 5 inch round duct work, ( 3- adjustable elbows and 1 2 foot lenght of pipe) drilled through right side of dog house and through floor and lower compartment, bend-up a rect. scoop with screen to ards front of coach. These 3208NA"s need to breath!!!! Any questions, feel free to e-mail me. Russ

Comments:
Hotfoot: Remember that pulling hot air from behind the radiator will reduce your engine power by the reduced density of the warmer air. You must duct intake air from a cooler location. If you don't have black smoke in your exhaust, you aren't supplying to much fuel for the air induced.

Subject: Aircleaners & airflow
Comments:
In attempting to recreate one posters' comments, I did take off the top of my aircleaner, which still left my airfilter in place, and still active...I noticed no increase in performance on my '79, no increase in mileage, no cooler running...All I noticed, was that the airflow noise from the engine was much greater...I do not recommend this...Perhaps, to increase power and mileage, we should be looking at replacing the fan-belt driven cooling fan, with an electric one...

Subject: Axle loads
Comments:
Has anyone weighed their coach in detail. I have a 83' PT-40 with a GVWR of 42000 lbs. Front axle rated at 13,200, drive axle at 23,000 and tag at 10,000. I recently weighed the coach with partial loading (everything that normally stays in the coach)pl s a full load of fuel and 1/4 tank of water. The gross weight with driver on board was 40,840 lbs. Front axle was 14,180, drive at 19,400 and tag at 7260. Obviously I am overloaded on the front axle. If I removed everything from the coach, I couldn't get within the gross weight limit of the front axle. WHAT GIVES HERE? On top of that, most states have a legal limit of 12,000 lbs. on any single axle. Thi makes us, because I'm assuming there are lots of others in the same boat, out of legal limits on our coaches. I've requested information on this matter from Blue Bird, but have not gotten a response. Can anyone shed any light on this subject. Thanks, R.E. (Ron) Marabito

Subject: Dometic Refrig. Malfunction
Comments:
1986 PT40. I have a Dometic refrigerator, model RM 3807 installed in a Class A. It works fine on ac or on gas while stopped. Underway, on gas, is another story. It will work for a while and then the check light will come on, and the gas light will turn of . It's almost like the refrigerator reaches the temp it should be at, shuts off, and will not relight when the temperature increases again. One has to turn the refrigerator off, wait a few moments and then turn it back on. It will work a while and then th sequence will repeat. I've had it "fixed" several times including a new circuit board. On one occasion it appeared that it had been fixed -- the tech cleaned the burner -- rust had fallen down from the exhaust vent. This worked for a while. I cleaned the burner again and thought I'd fixed it again. It soon resumed the old sequence of malfunctioning. Can anyone offer any insight to this problem? Additionally, I have heard of a "two side soldered Dinosaur circuit board" that will solve many Dometic anomalie . Where can you get one? Any insight regarding them?" Alternatively, is there anything in the BB saftey circuitry, i.e., gas leak detectors that could be causing this? There are no indicators that any gas is leaking. Call 540-752-1154 collect or email. Thank you

Found a place in San Marcos, CA to build custom water tanks. Dave at MGM Plastics did a great job on my 126 gal 86PT40 tank. $340 plus tax in CA. 3/8 inch thick polypropolene, with inspection plate access hole, level gauge screws, and a baffle across the middle. BB's have a rough time with colapsing tanks in the 80's, this solves the problem. I think to expensive to ship, but if your in southern CA,it might just be the ticket. Dan

Sounds like your air leak is between the filters and the engine (maybe a loose O ring) which allows the fuel to drain out of the filters and back to the tank. Drained filters also suggests you have a missing or faulty fuel line check valve which should b installed immediately before the primary filter

85 Blue Bird Wanderlodge 40 PT with the diamond steel decking over the metal roof (talking about strong!!)with the orginal TV antenna in great working order at this time but old Tech. by today's std. (stands a mile up in the air, if you know what I mean o have seen one when up in usage)......... QUESTION: On an install with this non-regular type of roof (diamond steel decking covering) what should I be looking for in a set up for a GREAT satellite dish system..... Should I do away with the reg. old TV antenna and replace the area of use (since all the wiring, etc. is there and ran through out the coach now) with the WINEGARD type system that has the dish with the antenna (local TV viewing) and go with the simple no e-automatic but probably more reliable system //// or the Automatic DBS system (this unit might just set on top of the roof and control wires is all I need to fish down into the coach) if it mounts on top with out the additional inches to content with bec use of the thick steel diamond decking that is up there now.........?????? I don't know if the Blue Bird is just going to be alot of extra installation problems due to the above mentioned......... What is the thought of travel with the Satellite Dish unit when it comes to hitting trees, etc.........What kind of protection or problems has anyone had with their unit??? Will the Winegard unit or any other brand of unit handle all the Birds (satellite) for present services (Dish, Direct, etc.) and any furture Digital Broadcast thats coming down the road.... Looking towards thought and brands of systems that would work will with all the limitations, etc....... SUGGESTIONS, SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REGARDS Gregg

Subject: Doghouse Insulation
Comments:
Yes, I have replaced doghouse insulation. I first removed the doghouse, and scraped the remaining insulation off with a 3" putty knife. I bought a good grade of sound insulation from Holland Motorhomes, the 4-layer stuff with a heat-reflective inner layer, cut it to shape, and glued it on using 3 -77 spray adhesive. Be careful to follow the directions on the adhesive as it is a contact adhesive and if used properly, the initial contact will hold it well enough to tear the insulation if you try to move it. Good insulation is also available from West Marine (www.westmarine.com) as it is used in boats. You will get better heat insulation from an insulation with a reflective inner surface, or better sound insulation if it has an "egg-crate" type inner surface. I chose a product which has foam/heavy rubber or lead/foam/foil. This product works well and is the same thing that Monaco uses for engine bay insulation. There are other products which will also work well, don't discount the value of a dense-pile carpet n your doghouse and floor.

Subject: Turbo Cat
Comments:
While I agree for the most part, there is no reason for these coaches to crawl uphill. First, beware of a non-turbo engine with a turbo added, it can self-destruct. A NA or non-turbo engine is not designed to run pressurized intake air, and the heat can kill the engine. A turbo engine will have different valves and pistons (4-ring pistons I believe) for the additional power and heat. The 3208 runs up to 435hp (stock) in marine use, but that doesn't mean that anyone can "hot rod" their cat and expect it to hold up. You need a lot of cool water to do this (like a boat). If you look at an early coach with a turbo engine, check with a cat dealer and he can tell you from the engine serial number if it is a turbo engine, or was rebuilt as such. Next, there is no reason to wait around for your 3208 to climb a hill. There are some simple fixes to make your engine run better, and if done properly you can actually extend the life of your engine. First, BlueBird felt that the 3208 would be happiest sucking its intake air through a straw. Wrong. If you can run full-throttle down the highway and see black smoke from your exhaust pipe, you're running rich and therefore not getting enough air. If you dd air, you will add power and get better fuel mileage, your cylinder temperature will also be lower and your engine will last longer. Take apart your air intake system and make it all BIGGER!. A clean air filter is also very useful here. Next, you can increase your power somewhat by advancing your fuel timing. A NA 3208 will have 6degrees advance stock I believe, you should be able to run about 12.5degrees and get better high-end. If you really want to make an early 3208 run sweet, do wha I did and update the injection pump to a later model with a higher injection rate at 12.5degrees advance, you'll need injectors with a lower opening pressure, and this will improve your fuel mileage as well and get rid of that characteristic mosquito fog ing smoke when you start your coach cold to leave the campground. This however can cost around $3000, you have to be a fanatic to bother. The result for me is about 47mph on a 3% (sustained) and a minimum speed in the mountains on I-65 through the Smokeys of 52mph with a Tracker toad. I've passed turbo FCs climbing these grades. At higher altitudes a turbo is best, it pressurizes the intake air and makes up for the thin air. Climbing to 10,090ft to Independence Pass on 6% grades got me down to 35mph, with a turbo I'm sure that it'd be better. Yancey Caterpillar in Macon, GA made the injection changes for me, I highly recommend them (just south of Fort Valley, BlueBird sent me). If you are looking at a used Bird, there are many things to look at/for, be sure that you ask lots of questions. A good one is wonderful, a poorly maintained one is expensive. Good luck and happy trails, - Jeff

Subject: Turbo Cat
Comments:
First a little background.3208 Cat engines became available in Wanderlodges begining in 1976. This was a 210 H.P. non turbo and was used thru 1982.The 1983 models had 225 H.P. turbo's except for the last dozen or so which were built with 250 turbo's.[You aid you wanted 80 -83]. There is not what I would call a "BIG/NOTICABLE"difference in performance,at or near sealevel but this becomes less and less true as you go up in elevation. At 8,000 ft.there is a significant difference in performance. AT 8,000 ft. on a 3% grade in a non t rbo, your spouse can get out and walk your dog.WITH a turbo, the dog or the spouse would get too tired keeping up. That not withstanding, you are on the right track. There is no motorhome with a bigger bang for the buck than those older F.C.'s. Good luck Mike

RON IS YOUR COACH A FOREWARD CONTROL ? IF SO , THERE IS AN ''O'' RING AROUND THE THROTTLE SHAFT IN THE INJECTOR PUMP WHICH IS PRONE TO FAILURE AND WHEN IT DOES IT WILL ALLOW AIR TO BE SUCKED INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM AS YOU DESCRIBE AND MOST OF THE TIME IT WILL NO LEAK ANY FUEL IF IT DOES LEAK FUEL OUT IT WOULD BE AT THE INJECTOR PUMP . Subject: ice maker hook up
Comments:
answering my own question Found where the hose going to the ice maker hooks in. I'm glad it wasn't a snake since I'd been looking right at it. It's hooked into the water lines down on the floor -- under the sink. Anyhow, it was easy to hook up a valve so the water can be turned off to the ice maker. Two reasons to do this as I see it: 1. Water can be turned of if the ice maker malfunctions and leaks. 2. Water can be turned off after the ice maker has been winterized -- less re-winterizing in the event coach is taken out on short trips during the winter. Having the washer, insta hot and icemaker isolated makes the re-winterizing several times during the winter a snap.

1980 33FC Yesterday I noticed that my (AC) voltage monitor panel above the kitchen counter was not working while plugged up (30A) at the house. I confirmed that I did have voltage (AC). I thought that it was possibly the panel since neither the volt m ter nor the green polarity indicator didn't work. However to double check things I cranked the generator and both voltmeter panels came "alive" and worked properly. Since I still do not have a service manual or schematics to go by does anyone have any s ggestions on where to look for problems? On the same note, where are the AC circuit breaker boxes grounded? Also before the voltmeter panel quit working on shore power I noticed it indicating low AC voltage (around 105v) which made me wonder about possible corrosion on connectors. Any suggestio s?

Mateo: It's a goofy set up. At least three ways to do it: (1) Pour the solution into a water hose, hook up the hose, and turn it on -- don't know how great an idea it is to run Clorox through your water filter(s) (2) Disconnect the vent hose from the wate tank and pour directly into the tank. SAFTY ITEM. 8V92TA in 1986 PT40. A gentleman at the 1999 Ralley in the Valley, to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude, pointed out a trend in the mid 80's 8V92 engines. It may apply to the 6V92 (I don't know). It seems a braided line rubs across the throt le body(?) or fuel contol(?)(the part where the throttle cables go in to). This braided line cuts a groove in the metal. The groove in mine was about 1/8" deep. According to this fellow it wears all the way through resulting in fuel being pumped out all o er the place: an expensive repair. This is serious business folks! The fix is to position a wire tie to pull the braided line away from the metal. If you want more details call me at 540-752-1154. I can email you a picture pointing out the exact area to examine.

TO KEEP THE HOLDING TANKS FROM VENTING TO THE INTERIOR OF THE COACH THE ''P '' TRAPS UNDER THE SINKS , SHOWER AND WASHING MACHINE MUST HAVE WATER IN THEM . THE WATER IN THESE TRAPS CAN SLOSH OUT OR SIMPLY EVAPORATE BUT WHEN ITS GONE YOU KNOW IT . DID YOU EVER DIG A HOLE AND PUT THE SAME DIRT BACK IN THE SAME HOLE ? IT WONT FIT . THERE'S ALWAYS A HUMP . SAME LAWS APPLY TO MOVING FROM ONE COACH TO ANOTHER . SIZE OF COACH DOES NOT MATTER , YOUR STUFF WONT FIT . 8 . TO USE THE ALTIMITER IN YOUR BIRD YOU MUST KNOW ONE OF TWO THINGS : YOUR CURRENT ELEVATION WHICH YOU THEN SET USING THE SMALL BLACK KNOB LOCATED IN THE FACE OF THE ALTIMITER . THE BIG HAND INDICATES HUNDREDS OF FEET AND THE SMALL HAND INDICATES THOUS NDS ; THE CURRENT BAROMETRIC PRESSURE AT YOUR LOCATION . YOU THEN USE THE SAME KNOB BUT SPIN IT LEFT OR RIGHT TILL THE CORRECT READING APPEARS IN THE SMALL WINDOW IN THE FACE OF THE ALTIMITER . Subject: air dryer
Comments:
My previous question on 01/07/00 is germane. 1986PT-40 8V92TA. I previously asked a question about air dryers and was wondering about the advisability of switching to an ADIP or an ADSP dryer that incorporate a spin on filter (spin-on good for 350,000 miles) vice sticking with the current AD-2. Got ome input from you folks that helped a lot. Here's how it panned out. While the advantages of the two spin on types are obvious there is also a significant drawback. The cartridge spins off the top -- while there is room to spin off, it becomes quite a st etch (arm wise) to do so and there would be a little interference (working room)from the two adjacent air tanks. These two dryers are evidently made for modern truck usage -- to be easily serviced from above. The current AD-2 while requiring more frequent servicing, is easily accessible from the bottom. I had no confidence that the dryer had ever been serviced on this coach. Depending on where you read in the manual, it should be serviced annually, 23,000 miles, or 900 engine hours. Discussion with several fleet operators and assorted mechanics regarding service intervals elicited responses ranging from "huh", "36,000 miles", "every three-five years", "when the purge valve fails",(this might not be a bad option) or "wait to failure"! I replaced the dryer wi h a remanufactured unit. It turns out there was very little water in the tanks so the old dryer was doing it's job -- since 1986! Replacing the desiccant material probably would have been adequate! So, what am I going to do in the future? As long as the a r purge valve operates correctly, (strong discharge, no sneezing or sputtering and no oil) and no significant amount of water comes out the three reservoir tanks, I will probably just replace the desiccant material, and low end "O" rings every 3-5 years. t turns out, after having been through the evolution once, the hardest part is spelling "desiccant" correctly. New issue: On some 8V92TA applications there is another small screw on filter on the compressor itself that would probably have to be reached from above (through the bed). An allegedly knowledgeable individual took a peek at mine and said it didn't have a screw-on compressor filter, but had a hose running to the clean side of the large engine air filter itself. Great news if this is how it's supposed to be. Comments?

JAKE BY THE WAY IS SHORT FOR JACOBS MFG.THIS TYPE OF BRAKE IS AN ENGINE COMPRESSION RELEASE.IN 84 BLUE BIRD WENT TO A TRANSMISSION OUTPUT RETARDER BECAUSE THE COMPRESSION R LEASE RETARDER IS FAIRLY INEFFICTIVE ON A TWO CYCLE ENGINE.DRAWBACK TO TRANS RETARDER, OTHER THAN THE COST OF THE UNIT IS THAT IT DOES INDEED BUILD TRANS FLUID TEMP.BIRD INSTALLED A FAN OVERIDE SWITCH ON THE DASH THAT ALLOWS THE DRIVER TO TURN ON THE ENGI E FAN . THIS HYDRAULIC FAN IS AUTOMATICALLY ACTIVATED BY ENGINE COOLANT TEMP. WHICH OF COURSE STAYS TOO COOL ON THE ''DOWN'' SIDE OF THE HILL TO ACTIVATE THE FAN. THE TRANS FLUID COOLS THRU THE BOTTOM OF THE RADIATOR SO UNLESS YOU MANUALLY ACTIVATE THE FA ,THE TRANS TEMP IS GOING TO SHOOT UP PRETTYFAST. ALSO, TEMP BUILD UP TIME IS EXPONENTIALLY CONNECTED TO SPEED . THE FASTER YOU GO -- THE QUICKER THE TEMP COMES UP. THE RETARDER'S JOB IS TO KEEP YOU FROM BUILDING SPEED ON A DOWNHILL SO FAST THAT YOU HAVE O STAY ON THE SERVICE BRAKE TOO MUCH .NO RETARDER IS DESIGNED TO REPLACE YOUR SERVICE BRAKES , THEY ARE DESIGNED TO ASSIST. 1987 FC-35: Air suspension inflates and operates properly. The coach is not equipped with the optional air leveling system. Dumps fine when either interior or exterior switch is used. But, when parked and suspension is not intentionally dumped, over a five to six hour period, drops slowly or could dump, I have never caught it. There is no pattern, only the front, the rear or the entire coach may drop but it never remains completly up. The end that remains up may stay for several days and then drop. Air piping is factory, no additions or deletions. Three height control valves, the electric valve controlling the dump valves and one dump valve have been replaced. The step valve and filter were replaced and were the only ones that could actually be he rd leaking. Some minor air leaks have been repaired. Bluebird and Ridewell both tell me this shouldnt happen but can offer no reason it does or solutions to remedy. Has anyone experienced this or know of anyone that has? 1986 PT-40. The air dryer in this coach is the AD-2. Manual calls for replacing the desiccant annually -- smart money says one should also replace the "o" rings. By the time one pays for labor the cost appears to be about $200. Alternatively, a rebuilt AD 2 is about $200 with minimal labor and return the the core -- the old AD-2 to the supplier. I asked if there is a better way to skin the cat. They thought I should consider upgrading to an ADIP. It costs about $450-$100 for the core +- $100 labor to inst ll. The ADIP incorporates a spin on/off filter that is bigger around, thus allowing greater area for the desiccant to do it's thing. It is good for three years/350,000 miles. While I could probably do the change out on the AD-2, my track record is such that I would screw it up Royally the first time out, but in the out years, I could easily change the spin on/off ADIP filter at Approx $50 (every three years). Assumming one does the dryer maintenance as required, it appears break even is three/four years. Has anyone done this? Does anyone know a better way? I hate paying labor rates when I can do the job with a minimum of brains and skill!

Bluebird has the repllacement fans that are alum. and much better than the original plastic fans. You need to turn the condenser unit on and check the rotation on each side so you will know whether you need clockwise or counter-clockwise fan.

Many people trying to fix the old roof airs, and, frankly, their efforts are being wasted...If one replaces the orginal airs, that each draw 15.5 amps, with the newer Coleman units that draw 10.5 amps, with the SAME RATED OUTPUT, they will be very happy.. Downside: You cannot control on - off from the driver's seat...Upside: You should have stopped a half hour ago for a cup of coffee, and to adjust your airconditioner...Additionally, for those people who live in HOT areas, with a 7.6 Kohler genset, one co ld imagine that you could add a THIRD unit to the top, and still be within operating perameters.

Again, I see the hot water problem has come up...I have a '79 33' FC/NC...The unit sat unused for 10 years, and I, too, could get no hot water...While many people kindly advised me many solutions, this is what I did, and it works: First, remove the stove to access the water mix valve in the back of the shower...Remove it, while trying to not remove too much skin from your knuckles...Take this lovely, heavy, well - engineered object to your local plumbing supply, and, having found something that has close onnections to the original, donate said original to the nearest waste container...THEN, after you have replaced the original, somewhat complex mechanism, add a pressure tank to your water system, between the pump and the demand side of the system...This a dress the solution of balanced mixing in the hot water mix valve, which was trying to compensate for the fact of the hot water side being self - pressurized. Low tech solution to a medium tech problem.

I, too, had water leaks, and found that the aluminum flashing at the juncture between the roof and the side panels on the outside, cover vents in the roofline of the coach...I also observed that my '79 had REALLY old weather stripping for that flashing... o, I took the aluminum off, cleaned the old stripping off, and replaced it with new, neoprene strips, put the aluminum back on, no leaks! Additionally, as the units become older, the sealing between windows and the frame of the windows shrinks, adding t rattles, AND, if there is a big windstorm on a side, leaks along the windows...Micro - holes drilled at the ends of the tracks where the windows slide will deal with the water build - up in the track, before it can spill over into the coach...I am experi enting with a silicone plumbers compound to inject into the frames, themselves, through the old seals, to see if I can fix that problem without reglazing the whole coach. 1986 PT40. The coach has fairly severe water leak(s). After a rain storm water can be found in the bays -- the carpet is wet around the doors. Upon inspection it appears the water comes in from on top of the doors, as if it has run down the interior walls puddled above the bay doors and then ran down, wetting the carpets. I have replaced/resealed all the vents, replaced the AC seals, and resealed the fan. I have peeked, poked, and prodded trying to find the source but have been unable to do so. I don't wa t to do a major disassemly of the interior or remove the diamond plate roof unless I have to. I've tried to isolate the source by moving around tarps, etc. Help! Copy of note sent to Gary: You probably will want to replace the batteries or at least have them checked. I would also check the tires not only for wear but also for "weather checking" or whatever the term is. Tires can dry rot with still having good tread and the damage may or may not be visable to inspection. Another concern that comes to mind is the quality of the fuel still in the tank. Diesel is known to "go bad" after time and if the owners didn't have some sort of treatment in the fuel this may be the case. Have it hecked and also you might go ahead and install a new Racor fuel filter element. I have a 1980 33FC and off the top of my head (I'm at work) it uses the 2-micron filter. You are right, the Bluebird is a more "complicated" coach than the typical generic m torhome. At the same time it is so much better built there is no comparason between the 20 year old unit you are looking at and even most brand new typical MH's. IMHO Of course I'm biased. ;) If you like to tinker and improve on things these units are worth putting your time and money into. If you are looking to purchase a motorhome, fuel it up and go without doing anything, you may be looking in the wrong place. It is 20 years old and will probably need some TLC. If you have further question on that particular year please feel free to e-mail me. I'm no expert but I will be glad to share what I have gained so far. Most of what I have gained so far has been OJT on weekends crawling around, underneath and replacing as I go. Its been a blast and if you're like me its the best way to learn.....

As a fairly new owner myself and the fact that mine is an FC not a PT, I will still attempt to address a few of the questions that Dan posted. Knobs: don't know, replacement tanks: don't know, try calling Bluebird. As far as pulling a Jeep Cherokee, I pulled one up through the mountains of North Carolina with no problem. I really couldn't tell it was back there. Grades that slowed me way down would have done so with or without a toad. I'm pulling those steep grades and a cherokee with only a 210hp 3208 cat whereas you probably have 400 or so hp to push you along. The only concern I had (besides the overheating problem due to a non-functioning fan clutch) was the lack of an exaust brake. On one long steep descent I got a little concerned when my speed started building. As far as laminate goes, talk to the folks at your local Home Depot or Lowes (or equivelant in your part of the country). Lots of people restoring antique furniture have to address the same issue and good glues are available. Water filter is a must in my book. My class-C that I had before the 'bird didn't have one. Now I'm sold on them. Shortly after purchasing my 'bird I installed a new filter and being primarily a water drinker I'm well pleased. As far as adding chlorine, I believe that in the archived Q&A's someone added a marine style access "port" on their water tank to address this issue. I had done something similar on my old class-C for this very purpose. On your other questions, unless someone else can answer them try calling Bluebird directly. Those folks have been super helpful for me and have patiently fielded question upon question from me. Good luck, hope this little bit helps......

This is a self-response to a question that I posted a few weeks ago concerning overheating problems with my 1980 33FC. First of all thanks to all who posted and privately e-mailed me. After a non-sucessful search for a fan clutch that utilizes the stock pulley/belt set-up I relented and went with the factor solution. I drove down to Fort Valley and painfully paid a ridiculusly high amount for a Horten "air clutch". This unit utilizes air pressure and a thermostat to engage the clutch. The kit comes with a new pully/bracket assy., thermostat, belts, new fan blade and other misc. items. It is a really well made solution and offers the advantage of installing a switch on your dash if you want to manually engage the fan before shutting down. I'll not go nto details here on installation but will be glad to give a full account if anyone wants to e-mail me directly. Be forwarned, there are no instructions with the kit! The kit is a large box of parts. I have completed installation and have thoroughly tested it by pressurizing my system manually via home air compressor. While my radiator is out I am doing the radiator swing conversion after which I will put it all back together and do my road test. I will also be glad to share details on doing the swing conversion at home if anyone is interested....

Subject: overheating
Comments:
I have a 1980 33FC with NA 3208 CAT which has the engine driven fan. I occasionally encounter overheating problems most recently this past weekend in the mountains of western North Carolina. By the time I reached a spot to pull off the road the radiator was starting to boil over. Would replacing the engine driven fan with an electric unit help? Has anyone done this? What about auxillary transmission cooling? I think this would help but there doesn't appear to be a good place to locate the additional adiator. Any experience based suggestions would be most appreciated.

I am looking for an older Bluebird. I see ads for Forward Control units and see from this list that this indicates the motor is in front. Is this good or bad? I am used to a pusher and think the noise would be much less with a pusher. Any thoughts or comm nts would be appreciated.. Any other things I should be concerned about or look for in the new unit? We have traveled many thousands of miles using the original GPS receiver from DeLorme and their Street Atlas. Very satisfied. There are times we wonder how we'd manage without it. Occasionally we'll get something a little haywire ... but as a whole ex ellent product. They have a newer and presumably better receiver available now. Check http://www.delorme.com On ours, the "elevation" readings are worse than worthless ... but that's what we have an altimeter for ... right? No, we could not get it to work on the dash of the Bird ... not enough sky visable. I got a little box from radio shack --project box-- just the right size ... made a little notch in the window so it will close over the cable and voila ... If you have any questions, let me know.

Comments:
STILL LOOKING FOR REPLY FROM "MIKE K." ABOUT HIS MODIFICATION OF THE AIR INTAKE FROM 4" TO 6". I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL EMAILS FROM OTHERS THAT WOULD LIKE TO DO THIS ALSO. I GUESS WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT, MIKE IF YOUR OUT THERE, DID YOU JUST INCREASE THE INTAKE AT THE AIR CLEANER & THEN USE A DROP DOWN TO MAKE THE CONNECTION AT AIR BOX, OR DID YOU INCREASE IT ON BOTH ENDS? IF JUST AIR BOX, I CAN FIGURE THAT OUT. IF AT BOTH NDS, NEED SOME DETAILS ON HOW YOU DID IT. PLEEEEEEEEEZ, IF YOUR OUT THERE, GET BACK TO ME AND I WILL PASS IT ON. WHEN PULLING A TOAD, I'M DOWN TO 8MPG ON FLAT ROAD. NEED SOME MORE AIR. THANKS AGAIN, TOM

Am researching the addition of GPS navigation using a lap top and the proper software. Will the antenna work sitting on the dash at the front window or do I have to go external? Any recommendations on brand of GPS/software? Any other thoughts or tips w ll be appreciated.

Subject: gauges
Comments:
The speedo and tach on my 82FC have been quiting quite often. I replaced the speedo sending unit on the rear wheel and it worked fine for a while. Now it quit altogether and the tach works once in a while. I know it's a bad ground or hot lead at the gauge . Now here's the quesion......Opening up the front of coach gives me little room to the back of the gauges. Can the dash panel inside be removed without to much trouble to gain access? Also, does anyone have any input on Dunlap tires that my dealer wants to sell me? Thanks Russ

I have purchased an '83 and am repairing and have the folling questions. 1) The gas detector (lifeguard one?) is not working. Is there a replacement for these. 2) Steering has a small amount of play, but not to bad. Can the steering be tightened up any. 3) What axle ratio does a 1983 35' FC have? 4) I have the 3208T - 225 hp. Will it help/hurt to turn this engine up to produce more hp.
