Jeff - 05/25/99 21:01:46 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: Hot Water |
Comments: The original water heater is a "motoraid" type which has radiator coolant running through a heat exchanger in the tank to heat the water. The water in the tank will get to scalding while driving in hot weather. The coolant should always be circulating through the water heater but there are water valves beneath the coach to shut-off the rear heaters and water heater. make sure that these valves are open, hopefully they are not closed because of a leak. If they re open, lift the bed with the engine warm and see if the hoses to the water heater and rear automotive heater are warm/hot. There are also two push-pull knobs under the bed area which operate valves in the system via cable. These should be one in and one out for winter operation, the other one in/out for summer. The labels might be gone. I think that these could interrupt flow if in the wrong position. |

Comments: I believe that the '76 should have a Ford gasoline engine, or a late one could have a 3208 Cat diesel, the DD engine has probably been added. As far as things to look for, scroll down this page and there are some suggestions for older FCs, they are among the simplest mechanically and electrically however and most of the expensive parts are the running gear and major appliances. |

Comments: My husband and I have just returned from our 2nd week-end outing in our 'new' '77 35' Wanderlodge with a Cat diesel. We have been without electric hook-ups both week-ends and the only way we have gotten hot water is to run the generator. The manual is n t clear, but it appears that there is a way for the the engine to heat water in transit. How do we do this? We've had other motorhomes - other makes - newer, older, but we are really pleased with our Wanderlodge! Any other comments about this year, mode will be appreciated. |

Jeff - 05/05/99 12:52:52 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: Battery Drain |
Comments: You might try disconnecting the batteries entirely (negative side first). It is possible that there is a shorted or partially shorted battery cell which is causing the problem. You can also have them tested with a specific gravity type tester, this should indicate a bad battery. If they stay charged when disconnected, you will have to find out what is connected before the shut-off switch. Look first for wires connected to the battery directly, other than the heavy cables, and for wires connected to the junction stud, and the back of the disconnect switch. To find out what should be connected before the disconnect switch, or for schematics, call Blue Bird Wanderlodge at 800 992-6337 and Kenny or Russel can help you or send you the schematics. Also, some Wanderlodges have two battery disconnect switches, be sure that you switch them both. |

Comments: Brad: I had a "Dutch Door" swing radiator installed by Holland Motorhomes (800 221-7197) where they have done these for many years. They manufacture many of their own parts for the conversion. You could call and ask about buying parts and drawings. The mechanic there tells me that there is also a source in TX. Blue Bird later started installing the swing radiator at the factory, you can call Kenny there at 912 822-2360 / 800 992-2360. The normal price that I've seen for the installation is around $800-$900. Good luck. |

The "Dutch Door" option just became an important topic to me. My '84 35' FC doesn't appear to have one. What it does have is a constant engine coolant drip from the face of the engine. I took it to a shop recommended by the U S Army here in San Antonio that does a lot of work on Blue Bird transport type busses. The mechanic and I both agreed that it is probably the water pump. It is extremely difficult to see in there even with an inspection mirror. They are going to tear into it over the next week or so (money is a great concern to me so I told them to give it a low priority in order to gain a little discount). I asked if they were familiar with the Dutch Door or swing away radiator and the owner said he had seen one but had no idea where it came from. He said he would ask a Bluebird supplier in Denton, TX if he had any info. I recall from somewhere that the swing away radiator was a locally manufactured modification. Since the front end is already going to be dismantled it might make sense to install it now. My question is: Where do I get the specifications / parts/ drawings to show to the shop working on my Wanderlodge. Thanks again for your time and help. Brad Rath |

Comments: The "Dutch Door" is simply a swing radiator on an FC. If you have one you will see hinges on the underside of your front bumper. The bumper must be unbolted and swung down, the center exterior grille removed, and then the radiator unbolted to allow it to wing out on its hinges while still connected. If you don't have one, I feel that it's worth the money to have one installed. E-Mail me if you need more info, remove the REMOVE. |

Brad Rath - 04/08/99 00:26:26 My Email:brath@wans.net Subject: Lots of questions |
Comments: My family has had a wonderful first outing but it has left me with a lot of questions that aren't in the owner's manual. We have an '84 35'FC. 1. I can't find the water filter. I have the manufacturer's sheet for a disposable cartridge water filter, the owner's manual says it should be under the sink. There is a "micro bacterial" filter under the sink but it is not the type that uses a cartri ge. Also under the sink is the instant hot water tank. 2. The step has a hinged panel that opens to reveal a metal plate held by 4 screws. I removed the screws and plate and found a screw-on cap for some type of tank. I suspect that it is an oil holding tank for some kind of pneumatic oil dispensing system that the previous owner said was disconnected. If that is what the tank is for can I just remove it? 3. How widespread is the problem of the hood internal aluminum support braces on the Kool-O-Matic ceiling fan cracking? I took the exterior hood off and every support brace save one had failed. Kool-O-Matic wanted $166 for a whole new exterior hood. T ey won't sell a kit to just repair the aluminum struts. It is my opinion that the thing is made out of aluminum that is WAY too light for it's operating environment. I think this is a manufacturing defect. 4. On each side of the coach, near the front bumper is a rectangular clear light mounted on the faces of the forewardmost "basement" access doors. What do these lights do and how do you turn them on? 5. The back up camera turns into a TV when the ignition is shut off but I can't figure out how to get sound out of it. I have turned the pull on switch marked "sound" but it doesn't do anything. 6. How do I tell if I have "dutch doors"? 7. The owner's manual outlines a proceedure to empty the fresh water tank by pumping the water through a discharge valve located under the lavatory sink. It doesn't mention a cable operated valve co-located with the water heater fill / drain valve under the bed. This valve is labeled "Fresh water drain open / closed". What does this valve do? Thanks in advance for any help in unravelling any of these mysteries. Brad Rath |

They did evolve through the years, and newer is certainly more plush, more powerful, more expensive, etc. Having been through and under several, could you please explain, what are these significant differences? |

Brad Rath - 03/23/99 02:45:13 My Email:brath@wans.net Subject: Leaks around the windows |
Comments: Hello, I am a new owner of a fine 84 35'. My family and I just returned from our shake down trip where we encountered a real "gully washer." I was surprized by a substantial flow of water off of the top of window frame in the bedroom. There is no evid nce of previous water intrusion problems. I inspected the exterior seams, fittings and attachments pretty carefully above the leak and couldn't detect anything amiss. The drip rail is sealed with silicon that is complete and flexible. There was a small stream of water that does pass under the awning and over the rubber exterior gasket then down over the exterior of the window. I'm thinking that the gasket may be at fault but it too appears fine. Any help in troubleshooting this problem or stories of s milar experiences would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Brad Rath |
Jeff F243393 - 03/13/99 03:41:56 My Email:jamiller@iservREMOVE.net Subject: Older Birds |
Comments: You are correct Bob, the older 'Birds are rather pokey. In '77-'79 they were almost unchanged, they were the lightest and performed perhaps a little better than the '80-'82. In 1980 the air-ride suspension was added to soften the ride and the coach starte to gain more weight. '83 was the first year for the turbo, it only gained 15hp this year, not exactly revolutionary. They will top out around 65mph, not terrible but certainly not fast. Hill climbing on my '77 was decent, it would out-climb any carburate motorhome and many later FCs. A moderate grade could be climbed at 60mph, larger ones not so. Acceleration was never a huge issue as they were geared more for this and climbing. As my local Wanderlodge mechanic always told me, "if you're in that much of a hurry, you should have left yesterday". If you have questions regarding specific features or years, feel free to e-mail me or post the question here. I will try to answer. I know of no real "bad" years. The criteria that most people use is dollars and features. The colors of the older coaches date them a bit, but this can be changed if you wish. |

Jeff aka Wonderdog - 02/25/99 01:08:15 My Email:jamiller@iservREMOVE.net Subject: '83 FC |
Comments: David: Scroll down to a 5/11/98 response for part of your answer. When looking at this (or any) motorcoach pay attention to the level of care given. These coaches should last a very long time if cared for properly, and can be expensive if not. The '83 is a nice coach, and a pretty good year. The coaches are quite heavy, and with 225-250hp and 4 speeds they are a little pokey on the up-hills. The coaches are generally indestructable, and will endure a lot of punishment as far as rough roads, hot weather, and general daily use. Have the driveline and suspension checked by a professional, preferably a Caterpillar dealer, and the rest of the systems by an competant RV technician if you aren't able to. Run all systems, from 'fridge to furnaces, and f ll the water tank to pressurize the water/check the water heater if possible. Remember that as a Blue Bird, it will last a long time, and everything is bigger and heavier. Everything is also more expensive as they are truly truck parts, so don't overlook tires, air-bags, and other items that can cost big money. Look also for a swin radiator or "dutch door". This is very useful and will cost around $900 to have installed if you decide that you need one. It could cost about half of this for a belt or hoses on the road if you don't have one. Drive it and you'll be hooked. It sure is nice to be able to travel on windy days without needing both lanes! You'll never go back. Best of luck! |
Jeff - 02/25/99 00:48:24 My Email:jamiller@iservREMOVE.net Subject: '87 FC |
Comments: Bruce: The '87 FC differed from its predecessors in many ways, but is the same basic body. This site's "History" page tells some of the differences, and I'll try to fill in some more. The '87 saw an increase to 300hp from 250, and a 5-speed ZF transmision instead of the 4-speed Allison. The ZF trans is a good box, although the dealer/repair network isn't nearly as widespread as is allison's, and there are some problems with the ZF's el ctronic control and internal wiring, however they are fairly rare. This combination made the FC perform quite well. The '87 has the A/C units reduced from 3 to 2, and the diesel genset is relocated and reduced to an 8KW due to the reduced need with 2 A/Cs. It is now on the left side instead of next to the entry door curb-side. Other changes are largely comfort and appearance. New front and rear styling, trim, and new interior. The new interior included the new floorplan as well as nicer surfaces and colors. |

Comments: I have been the proud owner of a 35' 1978 FC with 210 hp N/A CAT. I have sold the unit and am looking to move up a few years. I am unsure about the differences between something in the '83-'86 age vs an'87. I know the '87 has the 300 hp engine and relo ated bathroom floor plan. From what I can tell, they are also considerably more expensive. I am not sure what some of the other differences might be. If anyone has researched this or experienced a coach in both age groups, I would enjoy hearing your th ughts. Also, if anyone knows of a good used coach for sale, please let me know. I would hope to find something that is mechanically sound, but as I remodeled our '78 interior front to back, I an not all that worried about the inside as long as electrical plumbing and propane systems are functional. Jeff - 02/19/99 17:04:35 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: steering |
Comments: Bert: This coach should steer quite well if all of the steering is tight, and the alignment is correct. The alignment must be to Wanderlodge specs, not Blue-Bird bus specs. Also, more pressure in the front tires will help with response. Most of all, remember that a 12' tall coach will not respond immediately to small steering input. Give a small correction and wait a second or two, don't saw at the wheel. |

I tried to correct by steering back to the left but it didn't track back as soon as I thought it should. We had the under carriage inspected & the only problem visible was play in bushings in left side control arms on steering axle. Would that affect coach going off to right? Jeff - 12/16/98 18:00:41 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: tape stripes |
Comments: There is bad news, and worse news. The bad news is that the cracks will show through. The worse news is that the stripes are a pain to remove, literally. My fingers hurt for days. I tried a 3M stripe remover tool which is a series of rubber disks sandwitched together on an arbor. You run this in an electric drill or equivalent. The local Wanderlodge dealer told me that this would work, it did not. I bought 3M Woodgrain remover and 3M Woodgrain Adheasive remover. These products worked, but it took a lot. The woodgrain remover sprays on from an aerosol can and forms a kind of a gel, so that it stays on vertical surfaces. I had to use a lot of this a d re-apply many times to get the woodgrain to soften enough to remove with a putty-knife. I did mar the paint with the putty knife a couple of times using this product. The adheasive remover comes next and removes (slowly again) the adheasive. This is a v ry expensive method as I used it on about 18' of one side and used 2 cans of each product (about $50 for the four cans if I remember correctly). All of these products should be available at an auto-parts supplier who sells body-shop supplies. On the rest of the coach, I used a Milwaukee heat gun (it cost less than 8 more cans of remover) and a putty knife with slightly rounded corners. The trick was to heat the metal, without overheating it. If you seriously overheat the metal, it could buckl permanently. I found that the old stripe had a very small temperature range where it was hot enough to bend and pull off, and above this range it would simply stretch and tear. Starting a new chunk to pull would hurt as you had to work with your hands in the heat. It was also June when I did this. Keeping the putty-knife blade warm also helped. When I was finished I replaced the stripe with a nice 3-color metallic vinyl stripe from a local truck graphics supplier to match the (new) interior colors. It really updated the coach and was much cheaper than a new woodgrain stripe. Well worth the effo t. I then matched one of the colors with the panel over the windshield and had graphics printed to stick up there, again the price is reasonable. The stripping process took several whole days, application of the new stripes was a breeze. |

WD - 10/15/98 12:59:03 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: Water Heater |
Comments: Dan: Your stock water heater has a "motoraid" heat exchanger to use engine heat to heat your water. The heater should hold heat adequately for a shower the next morning. If this is not sufficient, you can replace your current water heater with a propane m del relatively easily. Your propane supply is already there for the rear furnace, the water lines are of course there, and you will need to cut a hole through the side of the coach for the air intake and exhaust. Measure carefully for the access panel on he outside of the coach and remember to leave clearance for opening your bay door below. West Marine and Camping World have decent water heater prices. I suggest retaining the "motoraid" water heat exchanger that it already has. |

Wonderdog - 09/29/98 12:04:22 My Email:jamiller@iserv.net Subject: Flooring Choices |
Comments: I went through the same process for the same reasons. I decided to use carpet anyway for the noise reduction. I also replaced the pad with a heavy-weight convoluted rubber pad which reduced the sound level immensely. A dense, high-quality (and not white) arpet will clean easily. Although there are several laminate floors which mount on a foam substrate to help reduce vibration transmission, they will not absorb any of the noise in the coach. Carpet has a wonderful quality for absorbing the noise. If you d go the laminate route, choose one which "floats" on the foam substrate, and carry rugs and non-slip pads. You can experiment with placement of rugs in noise "hot spots" like one would in a sound room, and reduce a fair amount. Best of luck. |

Comments: My 1985 PT engine driven air conditioning leaks through the flex hoses that run the length of the coach, enough to require several pounds of F12 every year. The factory fix is to replace the flex hoses with new design nylon core hoses that don't leak. They go under and through the coach so the lines are invisible. Another way is to go up thru the rear of the coach in the vicinity of the air intake and run the lines forward just inside the roof rack. Does anyone have any experience on this? Wonderdog - 07/28/98 16:57:06 My Email:jamillerATiservDOTnet Subject: FC Power |
Comments: Jeff, I had considered the same on my first Wanderlodge project. The FC came with 210hp, 225hp, 250hp, and 300hp Caterpillar 3208s. The same Allison trans was used up to 250hp and a ZF 5-speed on the 300hp leading me to believe that the Allison MT-643 was 't adequate for the power, it might have been just for a 5th gear as the Allison 643 is a 4sp. Caterpillar has told me that I'd pay about $6500 exchange for my good 210hp to the 250hp turbo, plus labor. The rear-axle ratio (5.29:1 in the non-turbo/pre 1983) will still limit you to 67mph. The turbo coaches turned a 4.88:1 and taller ratio which will save fuel or let you run faster (not both, obviously) for about $800 exchange plus labor. |

Comments: Bumper, I might have looked at that same unit. If it is, it has now been traded in. Any systems that didn't work were simply disconnected and abandoned. Bad sign. A couple of comments: I understand that the '83 pusher had a steering design flaw. This, I'm told is due to the large drop between the steering box, and the front axle. There is a fix, an expensive one, which moves the box down. You should check in to this more as I'm not sure of the details, and also see if the coach has the fix already. The one that I looked at doesn't. A local diesel shop tells me that 250k miles is old for a 6v92, and the block could be stretched and not re-buildable. Have the driveline checked thoroughly! A rule of thumb is: when the parts that you see have been abused or neg ected, the parts that you don't see have also. This is the scarey part. I've just finished a restoration on a well kept older bird, and the difference in work necessary is huge. Be certain that you are stealing this rig if it is trashed, it will then be w rth your time. |

Wonderdog - 05/11/98 13:33:52 My Email:jamillerATiservDOTnet Subject: 83 FC33 |
Comments: Easy question, tough answer. The headliner is probably sagging due to a water leak. The headliner replacement can be a big job depending on where it is and what else has to be removed. The bigger quiestion might be whether the leak is repaired (properly) and what other damage might e ist. The dash and stripe are cosmetic, you decide what they're worth and get estimates. The co-pilot seat is likely an electrical problem, there is an air powered lock that holds the seat in place, it could simply be sticky. Bigger concerns would be things like drive-train and suspension, etc. If there are records on the maintenance of the coach, get them and look them over. If an engine survey hasn't recently been done, get one. An oil analysis is also a good idea and can be had fairly cheaply from Caterpillar or Detroit Diesel. A truck stop could probably help you on this if there isn't a local dealer. You could usually have the filters changed and sample the oil at this time, it is helpful to know the mileage on the oil. If you don't have maintenance records, it can cost an easy thousand to have fluids changed and adjustments. Does the dashboard light? This can cost thousands to fix. Do all gauges work? Are air-bags OK? tires? It is worth the time and money to drive the coac to a reputable dealer, possibly a truck/bus dealer also, to get a knowledgable check-up. Run all systems including the water and water heater. These coaches are excellent quality, safe and reliable, but a seriously neglected coach can cost a fortune to s raighten out. Best of luck, to e-mail me, replace the AT with @ and the DOT with . |

Comments: With my 81 FC I removed and replaced the hot/cold mixer. That did nothing. I noticed a brass or copper plug about 3/4 inch in diameter and removed it. Inside was a stainless (maybe industrial chrome) cylinder which had o-rings. Inside this part is ano her, machined part, which could be moved around inside with a small screw driver. I placed the whole piece in vinegar and let it soak. I then cleaned it so that the inside piece would freely move the full distance of the outside piece, then squirted all of it with lithium grease, put new o-rings on and reinstalled the thing. I then reinstalled the mixer with its o-rings and the thing worked fine. It does not seem logical to me but it worked. If you would like give me a call. 512-855-1940 |

Bob McGee - 12/01/97 21:37:48 Subject: Equal |
Comments: I have used Equal in two Motorhomes now, and have found it to be an excellant product. One warning is that you must use your own air to fill or maintain your tire pressure, as Equal will clump like cat litter if moisture gets in it. If you change tires yo can scoup it out and re-use it. It is best when installed by a dealer that has the installation injector. Such as where I get my Equal (Josam Frame and Alignment, Orl.,FL 407-438-7020) It cost about 20.00/wheel and continously rebalances for the life of he tire. Alot of truckers use this Stuff. I got fed up with adhessive wheel weights coming off and the need to rebalance at about the tires half life. Also if your in Orlando Fla. have an Alignment done by Josam they know Birds well, and use a diffrerent ystem to align that is far superior to Hunter and such. Used by Mercedes, Freightliner, Spartan (at the factory). Tel them Uncle Bob sent you! |
